Religion, Business, and Global Visions: An Exploration of South Korea’s Discourse on Halal

Driven by economic exigencies, the Korean government began to strategize entering rapidly expanding Islamic economy during early 2000s. Subsequently, decisions invest into global halal market ignited public opposition from evangelicals who rejected positive framing of halal—an concept most commonly used inform Muslim dietary laws. Based on fieldwork in Korea and analysis media sources, this article tracks development “halal discourse” through a frame discourses created government, actors, anti-halal evangelicals, evaluates strengths weaknesses their arguments. As these competing voices debated halal’s place society, supporters had respond evangelical pushback against halal, leading notable shifts discourse an issue that was rooted deeper underlying debates concerning multiculturalism, globalization, visions Korea.
